Arunima Chakravorty, principal and director of Delhi Public School (DPS) Bhagalpur, in an interview with TGC, spoke about academic excellence, holistic development, technology and experiential learning, while highlighting the importance of values, cultural roots and social responsibility.
Q. How would you describe the identity and achievements of DPS Bhagalpur?
A. DPS Bhagalpur has grown with the aspirations of Bhagalpur and the region. We combine academic excellence with values, discipline, creativity, innovation and social responsibility. Our students participate in academics, sports, culture, robotics, technology, journalism and national-level platforms.
Our identity rests on excellence, values and innovation, with a commitment to being globally aware yet locally rooted.
Q. How do you balance your responsibilities as Principal and Director?
A. As Principal, I remain connected with students, teachers, parents and the academic environment. As Director, I focus on administration, infrastructure, human resources, sustainability and long-term institutional development.
Both responsibilities ultimately serve one purpose: to create an institution where children can flourish.
Q. What role does the school play in initiatives associated with Maharshi Shrikant?
A. Education must remain connected with our civilisational and cultural heritage. Bhagalpur has a rich historical and spiritual legacy, and such initiatives help students understand their roots while developing a modern outlook and scientific temperament.
Q. How does DPS Bhagalpur approach holistic education?
A. Marks alone cannot define a child. We encourage sports, music, dance, theatre, literature, public speaking, leadership, technology, robotics, coding, journalism and community service.
Our real success is when students become compassionate human beings, responsible citizens and ethical professionals.
Q. How important are educational tours in the digital age?
A. Technology provides information, but experience creates deeper understanding. Educational tours develop independence, teamwork, cultural sensitivity and problem-solving skills.
We therefore seek to combine digital learning with real-world experiences. Technology and AI should enhance education, not replace human experience.
Q. What is your vision for inter-school and national competitions?
A. Bhagalpur has tremendous intellectual potential. I would like DPS Bhagalpur to become a platform for debates, quizzes, conferences, innovation challenges and cultural and leadership programmes involving schools from across India.
Our aim is also to contribute to making Bhagalpur an educational destination.
Q. Can DPS Bhagalpur challenge the reputation of prestigious metropolitan schools?
A. Absolutely. We should not try to become another DPS R.K. Puram or DPS Mathura Road; we should become the best version of DPS Bhagalpur.
Excellence is not geographically restricted, and our location can become our strength.
Q. How are parental expectations and education changing?
A. Parents seek academic excellence alongside confidence, creativity, technological capability and emotional resilience. With AI transforming careers, our responsibility is to prepare children for a world that does not yet exist and teach them how to think, question and continue learning.
Q. What is the institution’s larger vision beyond DPS?
A. I envision an educational ecosystem extending into higher education, research, technology, culture, entrepreneurship and professional studies. The aspiration is to build institutions and opportunities, not merely infrastructure.
Q. Do you see potential for a major journalism and mass communication institution in Eastern India?
A. Eastern India needs stronger institutions for journalism, digital media, filmmaking, data journalism, AI, fact-checking and visual storytelling. I would be interested in developing a world-class media and communication institution, potentially with Bhagalpur as a centre.
Q. Where do you see DPS Bhagalpur in the next decade?
A. I envision DPS Bhagalpur as an institution with a distinct national identity, supported by academic excellence, world-class faculty, AI and technology, research, global exposure, strong alumni engagement, sports, culture and value education.
Our greatest achievement would be producing intellectually strong, socially responsible and courageous leaders.
Q. What legacy do you ultimately want to create?
A. I want our legacy to be measured by the lives we touch rather than only by buildings, results or awards. If our students become successful professionals while remaining compassionate citizens committed to serving society, we will have succeeded.
A school creates students, a great institution creates generations. My vision is to make DPS Bhagalpur an institution of enduring significance for Bhagalpur, Bihar, Eastern India and eventually the nation.
