1. Scope

This policy applies to all paid subscriptions purchased from The Guardian Chronicle, whether bought on our website or through our mobile applications. It covers our digital E-Paper subscriptions and our print home-delivery subscriptions.

2. Digital E-Paper subscriptions

2.1 Plans and billing

E-Paper subscriptions are offered on a recurring basis. Prices are inclusive of applicable taxes and are displayed before you confirm payment.

  • Monthly — billed every month from the date of purchase.
  • Annual — billed once every twelve months from the date of purchase.

Your billing period runs from the date you subscribe, not from the first of the calendar month. If you subscribe on the 15th, your subscription runs to the 15th of the following month.

2.2 Automatic renewal

Subscriptions renew automatically so that your access is not interrupted. Where you have authorised a UPI AutoPay or card mandate, your bank will send you a notification at least 24 hours before each debit, in line with Reserve Bank of India requirements. You may cancel or modify that mandate at any time through your bank or UPI application, or through your account with us.

2.3 Cancelling

You may cancel at any time from your account, or by writing to us at the address above. Cancellation stops future renewals.

Cancelling does not cut off your access immediately. You keep full access until the end of the period you have already paid for. We do not pro-rate or refund the unused part of a period that has begun, except in the circumstances in section 2.4.

2.4 When we do refund

Because digital content is delivered immediately, subscription fees are generally non-refundable once the period has begun. We will, however, refund in full in the following cases:

  • Duplicate or accidental charge — you were charged more than once for the same period.
  • Charged after cancellation — a renewal was taken after you had validly cancelled.
  • Unauthorised transaction — the payment was not authorised by you, subject to verification.
  • Service failure on our side — where a fault of ours prevented you from accessing the E-Paper for a sustained period. We will normally extend your subscription by the affected period; where that is not appropriate, we will refund on a pro-rata basis.

Refunds are not available on the basis that an edition’s editorial content did not meet expectations, or because a subscription was purchased and then not used.

2.5 How to request a refund

Write to vaibhav.srivastava@theguardianchronicle.com from the email address registered on your account, quoting the payment reference and the reason for your request.

  • We acknowledge refund requests within 2 working days.
  • Approved refunds are processed within 5 to 7 working days.
  • Refunds are returned to the original payment method. We cannot redirect a refund to a different account or instrument.
  • Your bank or card issuer may take additional time to credit the amount.

3. Print subscriptions

Print home-delivery subscriptions may be cancelled at any time. Where delivery has not yet been made for a paid period, we will refund the undelivered portion on a pro-rata basis. Where a free gift was issued with a plan, its value may be deducted from a refund if the subscription is cancelled before the plan term completes.

Delivery complaints, missed copies and address changes should be raised with the subscription contacts listed on our Print Subscription page.

4. Failed payments

If a renewal payment fails, your payment provider may retry it. We will notify you and allow a short grace period during which your access continues. If payment is not completed within that period, access reverts to our free preview until you renew. No penalty or late fee is charged.

5. Price changes

If we change subscription prices, we will give existing subscribers advance notice as set out in our Terms of Service. A price change never applies to a period you have already paid for. You may cancel before the new price takes effect.

6. Disputes

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of a refund request, you may escalate it through our Grievance Redressal process, where it will be reviewed by our Grievance Officer.
