The ruling INDIA bloc in Jharkhand is set to showcase its unity as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha ( JMM) and the Congress official candidates will file nominations for the upcoming Rajya Sabha biennial elections together on Monday. They will file nominations at 11 am under the leadership of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. JMM nominee Baidyanath Ram and Congress candidate Pranav Jha will be accompanied by senior leaders of the INDIA alliance during the nomination process at the Jharkhand legislative assembly.
Alliance displays strength ahead of June 18 polls: Jharkhand will vote for the two Rajya Sabha seats on June 18, while the last date for filing nominations is June 8. With 56 MLAs backing the INDIA bloc in the state assembly, the alliance is comfortably placed to secure victory in both seats. Political observers view the decision to file nominations jointly as a strong message of solidarity, particularly amid recent speculation over differences between the coalition partners. The move is expected to reinforce the alliance’s position ahead of the election.
Series of meetings held to finalise strategy: Ahead of the nomination filing, top leaders of JMM and Congress held multiple rounds of discussions on Sunday to iron out differences and formulate a common strategy. Congress observers–former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and senior leader Ajay Sharma–held discussions with Jharkhand Chief Minister and JMM chief Hemant Soren earlier in the day.
Later in the evening, CM Hemant Soren convened a meeting of all 56 INDIA bloc legislators at his residence. The meeting focused on election management, coordination among alliance partners and selecting proposers for the candidates. Under election rules, each Rajya Sabha candidate must secure signatures from at least 10 proposers (MLAs) to file a valid nomination. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, JMM general secretary Vinod Pandey confirmed that both INDIA bloc candidates would submit their nomination papers together on Monday.
Nathwani’s sudden huddle with Hemant castes added spin: The political atmosphere became more intriguing after outgoing Rajya Sabha MP and industrialist Parimal Nathwani met Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday evening. It was Nathwani’s second meeting with Soren within 24 hours. Nathwani is widely being seen as a potential independent candidate in the Rajya Sabha election. His meetings with Soren have sparked speculation about possible support from sections of the ruling alliance. Political analysts believe the coming days will reveal whether Nathwani can secure the required support from legislators and who among the MLAs may emerge as his proposers. Parimal Nathwani had purchased nomination papers on Saturday.
