Why is there a tradition of offering fruits to Mahadev? Which is Lord Shiva’s favorite fruit?
In the Sanatan tradition, offering fruits during the worship of deities is considered a part of Naivedya. Fruit is offered to God as a sattvic food and a gift of nature. Devotees also offer fruits during Shiva Puja according to their faith. However, saying that Lord Shiva has only one ‘favorite fruit’ is not a completely scripturally proven claim. In different regions and traditions, there are beliefs about offering different fruits to Lord Shiva.
Why does the Bel fruit have special significance?
If one has to associate a particular fruit with the most prominent belief in Shiva Puja, then Bel fruit is the strongest option. The reason is not only the fruit, but also the special religious significance of the Bel tree associated with Lord Shiva. The tradition of offering Belpatra during Shiva Puja is extremely famous. The Bel fruit is also the fruit of this tree and in many places it is offered to Mahadev. This is why, in religious contexts, Bel fruit is particularly associated with Shiva Puja.
Is Bel fruit really Lord Shiva’s favorite fruit?
Here, an important distinction needs to be understood. ‘Lord Shiva’s favorite fruit’ and ‘the fruit that is especially offered during Shiva Puja’ are not the same thing. Religious tradition deeply associates Bel with Lord Shiva, but saying that the scriptures have definitely declared Bel fruit as Lord Shiva’s only favorite fruit would not be correct. Similarly, devotees also offer ber, banana, coconut and other fruits to Lord Shiva according to their traditions. In worship, the most important aspect is considered to be the feeling of devotion and surrender.
What should be kept in mind while offering fruits to the Shivling?
While offering fruits to Lord Shiva, the fruit should be clean and fresh. It is appropriate to offer Naivedya according to the local tradition of worship or the arrangements of the temple. Instead of placing something directly on the Shivling, it is better to follow the temple’s method of worship.
If the question is which fruit has special religious significance in Shiva Puja, then Bel fruit is among the most prominent names. But calling it ‘Mahadev’s only favorite fruit’ without context would not be factually correct. In Shiva devotion, greater importance is given to devotion, purity and surrender rather than the fruit itself.
