The Guardian Chronicle, an independent English-language daily newspaper, organised the ‘Guru Vashishth Samman’ ceremony on Wednesday to recognise the contributions of teachers, principals and educational leaders in shaping students’ futures and strengthening the education system. The programme brought together educators and representatives of educational institutions, with awards presented to individuals from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC)-affiliated schools.
Mahua Majhi, Rajya Sabha MP, attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Rajiv Manohar, vice-chancellor of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, was among the distinguished guests.
Addressing the gathering, Majhi said, “Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the character of students and preparing them for the future. The traditional ‘guru shishya’ relationship remains important, even as technology and the internet have made information widely accessible.”
She said teachers provide guidance, discipline and values that cannot be replaced by digital resources. She also highlighted the importance of developing reading habits among students and appreciated the newspaper’s efforts to promote standard English and meaningful journalism. Majhi said the newspaper should reach students preparing for competitive examinations as its rich editorial content would benefit them.
The DSPMU vice-chancellor said the initiative was a positive step towards recognising educators who contribute to society and nation-building. Referring to the traditional respect accorded to teachers, Dr Manohar said, “Their role extends beyond classroom teaching and includes inspiring students to develop their abilities.” He also stressed the importance of improving students’ reading and writing skills in Hindi, English and regional languages.
Prakash Kumar, principal of Painini School, Hazaribagh, said, “I prepare students for competitive examinations, and I often use TGC as a reference in my classes. Its editorials, cultural coverage and reports on contemporary issues provide valuable insights that help students broaden their knowledge and understanding.”
Representatives of participating institutions also highlighted the importance of recognising educators. The ceremony included the traditional lighting of the lamp, a cultural performance and the felicitation of educators. The event concluded with the felicitation of awardees and a group photograph.
