Two MGMMCH interns drown at Dimna Lake; third rescues himself

A late-night outing to Dimna Lake ended in tragedy after two interns of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) drowned, while a third narrowly escaped, triggering shock and grief across the medical college campus.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday at a prohibited stretch of the lake, where three intern doctors had gone after midnight.

According to police, the three interns—Sameer Kumar (25), Saksham Singh (24), and Yash Kumar (24)—reached the lake for an outing shortly after 12 am. Preliminary investigation suggests that Saksham entered the water for a dip, and his mobile phone accidentally fell into the water. As he ventured deeper in an attempt to retrieve it, he was caught in a strong current and disappeared beneath the surface.

Seeing his friend in distress, Sameer immediately jumped into the lake to rescue him. However, he too was overwhelmed by the deep water and swift current, and both went under.

Yash also entered the lake in an effort to save his friends, but the rising water level and poor visibility prevented him from locating them. He himself struggled to stay afloat but managed to swim back to shore. Police said Yash survived because he was a trained swimmer.

After reaching safety, Yash informed the college authorities, who immediately alerted the police. Rescue teams were rushed to the spot and launched an intensive search operation. Bodam police station officer-in-charge Niraj Kumar said Sameer’s mobile phone was later found intact in his pocket, indicating that he had entered the water solely to rescue his friend.

After nearly four hours of searching, trained divers recovered the bodies of both interns from deep inside the lake. “Both bodies were retrieved from deep water,” said Nazrul Bari, a Tata Steel-trained diver who took part in the rescue operation. The bodies have been sent to the MGMMCH mortuary for a postmortem examination.
