In a strategic move ahead of the crucial biennial Rajya Sabha elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has shifted its legislators to Ranchi’s upscale Radisson Blu Hotel in a bid to keep its flock together and ensure their safety and security.

Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Polls: The High-Stakes Triangular Showdown Explained

Of the alliance’s 24 MLAs, 21 checked into the hotel by 8 pm on Tuesday evening and are expected to remain there for the next 48 hours as the coalition gears up for the high-stakes contest. The NDA has thrown its weight behind independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, whose entry into the fray has transformed the contest for Jharkhand’s two Rajya Sabha seats into a keenly fought triangular battle. The ruling INDIA Bloc has fielded two candidates—Baidyanath Ram of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Pranav Jha of the Congress.

While JMM’s Baidyanath Ram appears comfortably placed to secure victory, given the party’s numerical strength in the assembly, the contest for the second seat has emerged as the main battleground. Nathwani and Jha are locked in a high-stakes showdown, with every vote expected to play a crucial role in determining the outcome.

The day witnessed a steady stream of NDA legislators arriving at the luxury five-star hotel with their luggage in tow. The exercise continued throughout the day, with MLAs checking in one after another at regular intervals. By the time this report went to press, three NDA legislators—Ragini Singh, Alok Kumar Chaurasia and JD(U) MLA Saryu Roy—were yet to arrive. Nathwani has already taken up residence at the hotel and is overseeing preparations from there.

BJP’s Latehar MLA Prakash Ram, who was admitted to a Ranchi hospital on Sunday after falling ill, also reached the hotel. Party leaders said his condition has shown signs of improvement, although he continues to be under medical supervision. BJP veteran and seven-time Ranchi MLA CP Singh defended the move, saying the NDA legislators had gathered at the hotel to ensure unity and security ahead of the election.

“Our MLAs are staying together to ensure their safety and security. We do not trust the ruling alliance and therefore cannot leave anything to chance. The gathering will also help us chalk out our strategy for the upcoming election,” Singh said upon his arrival at the hotel. Senior NDA leaders are closely monitoring the situation, while party managers are coordinating with the legislators during their stay. The decision to house the MLAs together is being seen as a precautionary measure to prevent any possibility of cross-voting or poaching by rival camps.

Numerical Deficit Forces Independent Candidate Nathwani to Hunt for Outside Support

With a combined strength of 24 legislators in the 81-member Jharkhand assembly, the NDA faces a numerical hurdle in the Rajya Sabha election. A candidate requires 28 first-preference votes to secure victory if all 81 MLAs cast valid ballots. The NDA’s tally comprises 21 BJP MLAs and one legislator each from the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Janata Dal (United), and AJSU Party. This leaves the alliance four votes short of the winning mark, making it imperative for Nathwani to garner support from legislators outside the alliance fold.
