Bokaro: Three members of a family hacked to death

Three members of the same family were hacked to death by a “mentally deranged” and alcoholic neighbour at a village under Nawadih Police Station in Bokaro district on Wednesday morning.

Bokaro SP Nathu Singh Meena said the accused, Raju Singh (42), is allegedly mentally deranged and an alcoholic. He had also attacked and injured his wife a few months back and had driven away his elderly parents. He has been arrested by the police.

“On Wednesday morning at Kukurlilwa village in Nawadih, an elderly person, Janki Mahato, was going to his agricultural field when he was attacked with an axe by the accused on the head and neck, leaving him profusely bleeding and unconscious. When the injured person’s wife, Sugiya Devi, rushed for help, she too was attacked. Both died on the spot,” the police officer said.

Later, the deceased’s daughter-in-law, Gauri Devi (45), also rushed for help, and she too was attacked by the accused, leaving her critically injured.

“The daughter-in-law was rushed to the nearby hospital, where she too died during the course of treatment. We will be sending all the bodies for post-mortem at Bokaro Sadar Hospital. The accused is being interrogated and will be remanded to judicial custody,” the SP said.

Police ruled out personal enmity between the accused and the deceased family.

“Neighbours claim that there was no personal dispute, and he started attacking them all of a sudden without any provocation. The accused has a history of fighting with other people and had driven away his elderly parents. He also attacked his wife with an axe a few months back and was currently staying alone in the house,” the police officer said.

Nawadih Police Station Officer-in-Charge Amit Kumar Soni said that the accused will undergo a medical test and, depending on the reports, he would be shifted under judicial custody to either a mental asylum or jail.

According to the local police officer, Raju Singh was abusing the deceased family members near their house. When the elderly couple objected, the accused rushed to his house, took out an axe, and started attacking them.
