The Directorate of Census Operations, Jharkhand, has successfully completed the first phase of Census 2027—House Listing and Housing Census—across the state, marking a significant administrative achievement. According to an official statement issued by Prabhat Kumar, Director of Census Operations, Jharkhand, the exercise was carried out across all 24 districts and 9 municipal corporations of the state. A total of 319 census charges were covered under the operation.
The census work was conducted in 70,594 house listing blocks (HLBs) across Jharkhand. Of these, 64,149 blocks were located in district areas, while 6,445 blocks fell under the jurisdiction of the nine municipal corporations. Officials confirmed that the house listing and housing census activities have been completed with 100 percent coverage in all designated blocks.
Expressing his gratitude, Prabhat Kumar thanked the Jharkhand state government, the chief secretary, the state coordinator-cum-secretary of the revenue, registration and land reforms department, deputy commissioners of all districts, municipal commissioners, chief executive officers, executive officers, charge officers, and personnel deployed in census cells established across districts and municipal corporations. He also acknowledged the valuable support of media organizations and journalists for helping ensure the timely completion of this important national exercise.
The successful completion of the first phase is expected to facilitate the smooth implementation of subsequent stages of Census 2027. The first phase of Census 2027 was carried out in two parts—May 1-15 and May 16-June 14—in Jharkhand.
While the first part of self-enumeration was concluded on May 15, the second part commenced on May 16 with door-to-door visits by the enumerators, who helped citizens to complete household registration by submitting correct information to 33 questions.
The mammoth exercise of India’s decadal census is being carried out after a hiatus of 15 years. The last census was conducted in 2011, while the 2021 census was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Census 2027 will mark the 16th census in the continuous series since 1872 and the 8th census since independence. The 2027 census is considered politically significant as it will be the first census that will count castes.
