Monsoon rains laced with wind speeds of around 30โ€“40 kmph accompanied by about 40 mm of downpour lashed the state capital, in which a plot adjacent to an under-construction building caved in, submerging several vehicles parked on the site on Sunday.

The parked vehicles plunged into a deep excavation pit inside the Raj Hospital campus on Mahatma Gandhi Road following the rains that lasted nearly two hours. The incident occurred around 8 pm at the site where construction of a new building is underway.

According to eyewitnesses, the ground suddenly caved in, causing a total of four vehicles to slide into the pit. While three of these vehicles remained partially trapped, the fourth sank deep into the collapsed portion of the land.

Hospital security personnel immediately launched rescue operations. A crane was later deployed to retrieve the vehicles that had sunk completely into the pit. No injuries or casualties were reported.

Sources said construction work at the site began around two months ago. Preliminary indications suggested that continuous excavation and heavy rainfall may have weakened the surrounding soil, leading to the collapse.

Police from Hindpiri police station reached the spot and initiated an inquiry into the incident. As a precautionary measure, movement of vehicles in the affected area has been restricted and entry of heavy vehicles has been barred.
