The prayer room in a house should be located in the Northeast (East + North), i.e., the Ishan corner, because Vastu Shastra states, “Ishamudhnir Samashrita.” In this corner lies the head of the Vastu Purusha, upon which resides the auspicious Lord Shiva, making it sacred and favorable. Therefore, Vastu Shastra says, “Ishanyam Devatagriham.” The cleaner this place is kept, the more auspicious, peaceful, and beneficial it becomes.
The primary reason for placing the prayer room or place of worship in the Northeast (NE) corner is that, while performing worship, a person generally wears minimal clothing, allowing the body to naturally receive Vitamin D through the morning rays of the sun. The favorable influence of the Earth’s magnetic energy from the northern direction is also considered sacred. At the same time, we continue to receive certain divine energies from space, which help develop concentration (stability of the mind), awaken mental powers naturally, and enhance alertness. These qualities become fully supportive in worship, chanting, meditation, and spiritual practices.
In the Vastu Mandala, the presiding deity of the Northeast corner is Isha, and the governing planet is Jupiter, which is considered the significator of divine spiritual knowledge. Jupiter receives the rays of the sun and, through them, spreads its knowledge-enhancing qualities in that place, illuminating the human mind and immersing it in devotion.
In the prayer room, the face of the chosen deity (Ishta Dev) should be towards the West or South so that the person performing the worship faces the East or North. This is considered beneficial for happiness, peace, and prosperity. While worshipping facing the East, the influence of the Vastu Mandala deities Isha and Parjanya, along with the planetary influence of Jupiter and the Sun, brings wealth and prestige. While worshipping facing the North, the influence of the Vastu Mandala deities Isha and Diti, together with the planetary influence of Jupiter and Mercury, brings knowledge and spiritual accomplishment.
The idols of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and Kartikeya should be installed facing the East. The idols of Ganesha, Durga, Kubera, and Bhairava should be installed facing the South, and the face of Lord Hanuman should be towards the Southwest (Nairitya). While performing worship, one should never place the seat directly in front of the deity; it should be placed slightly to one side.
While installing idols in the prayer room, always keep in mind that one idol should never be placed exactly facing another idol. A slight gap between them is essential, according to Vastu Shastra. The ancestors (Pitrs) should not be placed in the same row as the deities. A picture of the Vastu Purusha should not be kept in the prayer room. If a Havan Kund is to be established in the prayer room, its proper location is in the Southeast (Agni) corner.
The Ishan (East + North) corner of a house holds immense importance. Its positive or negative effects are often observed quickly in human life. Therefore, while constructing a house, great care and attention should be given to ensure that no unsuitable room is built in this direction; otherwise, serious consequences may arise because the ruling deities of this place are Isha and Jupiter. It is regarded as the most auspicious and sacred location in the house.
A toilet should never be constructed in this corner, as it may lead to illness, difficulties, financial loss, and mental distress. According to Vastu Shastra, this area should remain light and open, and with the flow of air, germs and foul odors from a toilet may spread into the house, polluting the environment and causing diseases. Constructing a bedroom in this direction may create many problems, and the progress of wealth and development may become slow.
A kitchen should also not be constructed in the Northeast corner of the house. Its consequences are considered equivalent to inviting destruction by fire, obstructing family lineage, creating difficulties for children, increasing expenditure on diseases, causing financial hardship, tension, and unnecessary worries.
