Rs 3.64 crore allegedly paid through forged records; four CMPFO officials named in case related to irregularities from March to September 2016

The Anti-Corruption Bureau of the Central Bureau of Investigation has registered an FIR against four officials of the Coal Mines Provident Fund Organisation (CMPFO) in Dhanbad, accusing them of processing 142 fictitious pension claims worth Rs 3.64 crore nearly a decade ago.

The irregularities allegedly took place between March and September 2016.

The FIR was filed on a complaint from the Chief Vigilance Officer of CMPFO. According to the complaint, Rs 3,64,48,052 was disbursed as pension arrears, in addition to regular monthly pension payments, based on claims that investigators say were fabricated.

The accused have been identified as Achintya Kumar, section officer at CMPF headquarters in Dhanbad; Deep Kumar, section officer at the Talcher regional office in Odisha; Ajay Kumar Sinha, section officer at CMPF headquarters in Dhanbad; and Manjeet Kumar, senior SSA at CMPF headquarters. The FIR also names unidentified CMPFO officials.

The CBI alleges that at the time of the irregularities, all four accused were posted as dealing assistants at the CMPF Regional Office, Dhanbad III. They are accused of forging records, bypassing prescribed procedures, and knowingly clearing 142 fake pension claims over the seven-month period.

The case surfaced after CMPFO’s vigilance department filed a complaint dated December 10, 2025, prompting the CBI to register the FIR. The agency has invoked charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and use of forged documents, along with relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Investigators note that the fraud involved a pattern of repeated fraudulent claims rather than an isolated incident. The CBI will now probe how the fictitious claims were prepared, how supporting records were allegedly forged, how they cleared the official approval process, and who ultimately received the money.
