Vastu is, in fact, the proportional combination of the five elements—Earth, Water, Sky (Space), Air, and Fire. Their proper combination generates “Bio-Electro Magnetic Energy,” through which a person attains good health, wealth, peace, happiness, and prosperity. Just as a human being can lead a healthy life by properly following the principles of medical science, similarly, by constructing a building according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, every person can make his life happy.
In medical science, just as a doctor saves a seriously ill patient from death through proper medicine and surgery, similarly, houses that have become the cause of illness, stress, and unrest can be corrected according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, enabling a person to once again attain health, peace, and prosperity. Since ancient times, Vastu Shastra has been formulated in Hindu scriptures by considering the principles of magnetic currents, directions, the effects of air, and gravity. So, let us see how following these principles enables human beings to attain happiness, peace, and prosperity, and what scientific mystery lies behind them.
Our Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees on its axis towards the east (23.45 Sin 284 + number / 365 number of days starting from January). Because of this tilt, the northern part, i.e., the Northeast (Ishan) corner, and the eastern side are inclined, while the southern part, the Southwest (Nairitya) corner, and the western side are elevated. Therefore, according to the rules, a house should be lower and more open in the North, Northeast, and East, while the South, Southwest, and West should be higher, heavier, and more covered.
The Northwest (Vayavya) and Southeast (Agneya) corners should remain balanced, neither higher nor lower, so that the sun’s rays can move smoothly from East to West without any obstruction. The magnetic waves moving from North to South and the air should circulate freely through every room of the building. Natural energy from the Bio-Electro Magnetic Source (B.E.M.S.) should also be able to enter the building without obstruction. Such a building is considered to be the giver of health, peace, happiness, and prosperity.
Through Vastu Shastra, one gains the knowledge of where the entrance, bedroom, kitchen, prayer room, toilet, etc., should be located in a house so that they produce a positive effect.
Entrance of the Building: The entrance should always be towards the East so that, along with sunlight, the beneficial and pure elements present in the air can enter the house through the doorway. The morning rays of the sun contain ultraviolet rays, which are a valuable source of Vitamin D, and their effect directly reaches our body through the blood.
In building construction, the eastern and northern sides should be kept lower and more open in comparison to the southern and western sides because the main objective is to allow the morning sunlight, containing Vitamin D and Vitamin A, to enter the building without obstruction. Likewise, the magnetic rays that move from North to South should also remain unobstructed. At the same time, air should slowly exit through the small windows in the South-West direction, which also helps reduce atmospheric pollution.
The main reasons for making the South-West portion of the building higher, constructing thicker walls, providing staircases, or placing heavy storage there are that the Earth revolves around the Sun towards the south and remains in a particular angular position. Therefore, placing greater weight in this area brings balance, and because this side receives more heat from the sun, it functions like an air conditioner, providing coolness during summer and warmth during winter.
It is important to note that because of the higher elevation and thicker walls in the South-West, the air received from the North-East becomes warm during winter and heats the rooms under greater pressure. During summer, this air, due to lower temperature and greater molecular pressure, exits through ventilators and small windows, thereby keeping the building cool.
Bedroom, Kitchen, Prayer Room, and Toilet
The detailed and mysterious descriptions of which part of the building these rooms should be located in to bring auspiciousness, along with the scientific reasons according to the principles of Vastu Shastra, will be discussed in the next article.
