Rahul Gandhi Jharkhand Visit: Khunti Meeting to Focus on PESA Rules and Gram Sabhas

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to visit Jharkhand during the first week of November. The proposed visit will include two separate programmes, with discussions expected to cover tribal issues, the implementation of PESA rules and matters related to the party organisation.

As part of the proposed visit, Rahul Gandhi is expected to travel to Khunti, where he will interact with traditional village heads from areas covered under the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution. The Rahul Gandhi Khunti Visit is expected to focus on tribal issues and the functioning of traditional village institutions.

A key focus of the proposed interaction will be the implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, commonly known as the PESA Act. Discussions are expected to examine challenges in implementing PESA provisions and ways to strengthen the role of traditional Gram Sabhas in local decision-making.

The implementation of PESA Rules in Jharkhand remains an important issue for communities living in Scheduled Areas. The proposed meeting in Khunti is expected to provide traditional village heads an opportunity to raise issues related to local governance and the functioning of Gram Sabhas.

Khunti has a significant tribal population and includes areas governed under the Fifth Schedule framework. The interaction is therefore expected to focus on the role of traditional village institutions, community participation and the implementation of provisions designed for Fifth Schedule Areas.

Apart from the Khunti programme, Rahul Gandhi is also expected to participate in a separate event focused on party organisation. The programme will cover organisational matters.
