Four people were killed, while the search for three is underway after an MUV plunged directly into the river near Gangnani Dharamkund in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi on Thursday morning, officials said.
The accident occurred on the Gangotri National Highway near Gangnani Dharmkund early on Thursday morning, when an MUV car plunged directly into the river.
According to preliminary information, there were seven people in the 7-seater car. Following the accident, the bodies of four individuals were recovered from the riverbank, while an extensive search operation is underway in the strong river current to locate the other potential passengers.
Given the gravity of the situation, the district administration, police, SDRF, and emergency services were mobilised immediately.
Reports indicate that the car lost control about 20 meters beyond Gangnani Dharamkund, towards Dabrani, and fell into the river.
Upon receiving notification of the incident, teams from the local police, SDRF, and the 108 emergency service were dispatched to the scene. Under the directives of District Magistrate Prashant Arya, relief and rescue operations were launched promptly.
Following the recovery of four bodies from the riverbank, the process of identifying the deceased has begun. Meanwhile, divers have been deployed to search for the other individuals who were in the vehicle.
The strong current of the river is posing a significant challenge to the rescue operation. Rescue teams are conducting a thorough search in potential areas along the river.
Efforts are also being made, with the assistance of the Maneri police, to bring an injured person up to the road so that immediate medical attention can be provided. The administration has placed the disaster management centre and medical teams on high alert.
District Magistrate Prashant Arya is closely monitoring the entire situation.
Officials present at the site have been instructed to accelerate the rescue operation and provide all possible assistance to those affected.
The administration is working to establish contact with the families of the victims.
An investigation into the causes of the accident is also underway. Further details are awaited.
