Jharkhand gangster Sujit Sinha, considered one of the state’s most dreaded organised crime figures, was killed in a police encounter late Sunday night in Jamtara district after he allegedly attempted to escape custody while being shifted from Sahibganj Divisional Jail to Dhanbad Jail.
According to police, the escort vehicle developed a tyre puncture while passing through Jamtara. As security personnel were shifting Sinha to another vehicle, he allegedly snatched a service rifle from a policeman and attempted to fire at the escort team. The police retaliated in self-defence, killing him on the spot.
Sahibganj Superintendent of Police Amit Singh and Jamtara Superintendent of Police Shambhu Singh confirmed Sinha’s death in the encounter.
The transfer was being carried out under heavy security after prison authorities ordered that Sinha be shifted from Sahibganj to Dhanbad Jail owing to security concerns. Despite the elaborate security arrangements, the alleged escape attempt turned fatal.
Sinha had already been shifted between multiple prisons over the past year as authorities sought to curb his influence from behind bars. He was lodged in Chaibasa Jail before being transferred to Medininagar Central Jail on August 10, 2025. He was later shifted to Sahibganj Divisional Jail, from where he was being taken to Dhanbad Jail when the encounter took place.
Investigators had long maintained that Sinha continued to operate his criminal syndicate from inside prison through mobile phones and trusted associates. His network allegedly extended across Dhanbad, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Ranchi and several other districts, with gang members continuing extortion and other organised criminal activities at his behest.
A native of Redma in Medininagar, Sinha also had deep roots in Palamu, where more than 20 criminal cases were registered against him. Across Jharkhand, he faced dozens of cases involving murder, extortion, firing incidents, Arms Act violations and organised crime. Though he had secured acquittals in some cases, several serious criminal cases remained pending against him.
