An eight-year-old girl, Sweety Kumari, died after being hit by a speeding pickup camper on NH-139 near Madhuban Hotel in Kauakhoh under Hariharganj police station area on Thursday afternoon at around 1 pm.
The deceased was the daughter of Mukesh Ram, a resident of Piroji village, and was a Class 2 student at the newly established primary school.
According to information, devotees from Banso-Piroji village had taken out a religious water procession on the occasion of Shravan Purnima. The devotees were returning after collecting water from the Batane River at Kataiya. During the procession, a pickup camper (BR 02 GD 6436), travelling from Hariharganj towards Chhatarpur, hit Sweety.
The impact was so severe that the girl was thrown several metres away and sustained critical injuries. People present at the spot took her to the Community Health Centre in the Hariharganj BDO’s vehicle. However, Dr Rajesh Kumar declared her dead on arrival.
Angered by the incident, local residents blocked NH-139 for nearly three hours, demanding compensation for the victim’s family. The road blockade was lifted after CO Manish Kumar Sinha and Police Inspector-cum-Station House Officer Devvrat Poddar assured the protesters of appropriate action and compensation.
According to eyewitnesses, the pickup camper was travelling at a high speed. Despite people signalling the driver to stop, he allegedly failed to do so. Following the accident, angry locals caught and assaulted the driver. Police later took him into custody from the crowd and sent him for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family is inconsolable following the tragedy, and mourning has gripped the village.
