The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) administration has taken disciplinary action against 17 senior students after an inquiry by the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC) found them guilty of ragging and indiscipline involving junior students.

Of the 17 students, 14 are from the 2024-25 batch and three from the 2025-26 batch.

As part of the disciplinary measures, all 17 students have been ordered to vacate their hostel rooms immediately.

Each student has also been imposed a fine of ₹25,000, which must be deposited in the college’s government account within three days.

The students have been barred from attending classes for 15 days. Eight of them have additionally been debarred from appearing in the third-semester examination scheduled to begin on October 8.

All 17 students have also been prohibited from representing the college in any competition for two years.

During the inquiry, the committee examined CCTV footage from the hostel and other evidence. The footage showed senior students entering the hostel premises between noon and 2 p.m., among other findings considered by the committee.

The action followed a complaint submitted online to the National Medical Commission (NMC), reportedly on October 2, by eight students of the 2026-27 batch.

They had alleged that senior students used objectionable language, made inappropriate remarks and subjected them to mental harassment.

College principal Dr Sanjay Kumar said on Tuesday the safety and security of junior students remained the administration’s top priority.

As part of measures to prevent any recurrence, the junior hostel has been placed under round-the-clock surveillance, with a home guard deployed near the hostel 24 hours a day.

Anti-ragging flying squads and local police will also conduct surprise patrols around the hostel at night.

A complaint box has been installed at a location outside the CCTV coverage area to enable junior students to report any incident without fear of being identified or monitored, the principal said.
