Lord Shiva & Baidyanath Dham: Why Ravana Couldn’t Take Lord Shiva to Lanka

Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga, located in Deoghar (Baidyanath Dham), is not only one of the 12 Jyotirlingas but also the centre of a mythological story associated with Lord Shiva, Ravana, and the gods, which has given this sacred place a special identity. It is believed that if the demon king Ravana had succeeded in taking the Shivling to Lanka, history and religious traditions would have been completely different. However, due to one condition of Lord Shiva and His divine play, this Jyotirlinga is now established in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Let us know this complete story.

According to the Shiva Purana, the demon king Ravana was a devoted devotee of Lord Shiva. He performed severe penance for many years in the Kailash and Himalayan region, but when Lord Shiva did not become pleased, he demonstrated the highest level of his devotion by offering his heads to Lord Shiva one by one. Ravana had already offered nine heads, and just as he was about to cut off the tenth head, Lord Shiva Himself appeared before him. He restored all of Ravana’s heads as they were before and, being pleased with his penance, granted him the boon of extraordinary strength and valour.

After receiving the boon, Ravana expressed a unique wish to Lord Shiva. He said that he wanted to take the divine Shivling of Lord Shiva to Lanka and establish it there so that Lord Shiva would always reside there. Lord Shiva accepted his request but placed one important condition. He said that if the Shivling was placed anywhere on the ground during the journey, it would become fixed at that very place, and no one would ever be able to move it again.

How Ravana’s Journey Was Stopped on the Way

Ravana set out towards Lanka carrying the Shivling. During the journey, by the divine power of Lord Shiva, he suddenly felt an intense urge to urinate. He could not do so while holding the Shivling, so he requested a cowherd (in some stories, an Ahir) standing nearby to hold the Shivling for a short time. However, the Shivling was so heavy that the cowherd could not hold it for long. Finally, he placed the Shivling on the ground. As soon as the Shivling touched the earth, it became permanently fixed there.

Ravana Used All His Strength, But the Shivling Did Not Move

When Ravana returned, he made every possible effort to lift the Shivling. He used all his strength, but the Shivling did not move even slightly from its place. It is said that, in anger and disappointment, Ravana pressed the Shivling with his thumb, and the mark is still believed to be associated with it according to traditional beliefs. After this, Ravana returned to Lanka empty-handed, and this divine form of Lord Shiva remained established at that place.

The Gods Established the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga

After Ravana returned, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Indra, and the other gods arrived at that place. They worshipped Lord Shiva according to the proper rituals and established the Jyotirlinga. Since then, this place has become famous as Shri Vaidyanatheshwar Jyotirlinga. This story is also mentioned in the Koti Rudra Samhita of the Shiva Purana, where Ravana’s penance, Lord Shiva’s boon, and the manifestation of the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga are described in detail.

Why Is He Called Baba Baidyanath?

According to religious belief, Lord Shiva restored Ravana’s severed heads and made him healthy again. For this reason, He is also worshipped here as the “Vaidya,” meaning the Lord who removes diseases. From this belief, this Jyotirlinga came to be known as Baidyanath or Vaidyanath. It is also believed that offering Jalabhishek and having the darshan of Baba Baidyanath with devotion and according to proper rituals provides relief from physical and mental suffering.

A Sea of Devotion Gathers During Shravan

As soon as the month of Shravan begins, millions of devotees of Lord Shiva arrive at Baidyanath Dham. During the Kanwar Yatra, devotees carry sacred water and walk for several kilometres to reach Deoghar, where they perform Jalabhishek of Baba Baidyanath. This fair is counted among the largest religious gatherings in the country. The sacred pond located near the temple complex, the traditional arrangements for Jalabhishek, and the centuries-old method of worship make the religious identity of this shrine even more special.

The story of the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga is not only an account of Ravana’s devotion but is also considered a symbol of Lord Shiva’s divine play, His condition, and His spirit of public welfare. This is why this sacred shrine in Deoghar continues to remain a major centre of faith for millions of devotees, and every year, devotees from India and abroad come here for darshan.
