East Singhbhum police have made regular and surprise bank inspections mandatory for police station officers-in-charge (OCs) as part of efforts to prevent robberies and strengthen security at financial institutions.
The move follows the September 24 armed robbery at the Canara Bank branch in Golmuri, where criminals allegedly looted gold and cash worth crores of rupees at gunpoint.
Under the new directives, OCs must conduct surprise visits to banks in their jurisdictions and inspect CCTV cameras, alarm systems and other security arrangements. They have also been asked to interact with bank managers to assess preparedness and ensure that staff follow prescribed safety protocols.
SSP Ehtesham Waquarib has instructed police station heads to ensure strict compliance with the measures. Banks, meanwhile, have been directed to maintain round-the-clock surveillance through security personnel and electronic monitoring systems.
Bank managers will also maintain regular communication with local police and share updates on security arrangements. Security personnel have been instructed to monitor visitors closely and alert police immediately if they notice suspicious behaviour or unusual activity on the premises.
The directives were discussed at a meeting chaired by SP (City) Lalit Meena with officials of different banks on Tuesday. The meeting focused on reviewing existing security arrangements and strengthening coordination between bank managements and the police.
Meena asked bank officials and police personnel to maintain close communication, adhere to security norms and ensure a swift response in the event of an emergency. The measures are aimed at preventing further incidents and protecting bank employees and customers.
