Over 7,000 children have become the voice of change through child reporting in the state capital. Students in classes VI to VIII have taken up the role of child reporters to make their local communities aware about child rights by observing their surroundings, identifying problems and communicating issues that deserve attention.
The initiative implemented by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) with the support of Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra covers seven blocks of districts including Itki, Angara, Ormanjhi, Ranchi Sadar, Kanke, Nagri and Ratu.
Ramlakhan Singh, a student of Upgraded Middle School, Gogarlachi, said, “Through reporting we bring attention of the communities to issues such as child marriage, child labour, bullying, body confidence, childhood non-communicable diseases, healthy eating and mental health. We are trying to develop a better understanding of surroundings while learning to communicate facts and experiences responsibly.”
The child reporter’s presentation in ‘Voices of Change – Child Reporters Conclave 2026’ held on Tuesday featured child-led skills, poems and experience sharing sessions through which they brought attention to issues affecting children.
Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, while addressing the conclave, said, “Child reporters can play a crucial role in bringing neglected issues affecting children to public attention by asking the right questions and highlighting problems in their communities.” He urged young journalists to use their voices responsibly to promote positive social change and raise concerns that often remain unheard.
The Governor identified child marriage, child labour, malnutrition, lack of access to education, violence against children and the adverse effects of climate change among the major challenges facing society. He said laws and government schemes alone could not eliminate these problems without corresponding changes in social attitudes and behaviour.
Gangwar urged child reporters to verify facts before sharing information and remain sensitive to the dignity and circumstances of the people involved. He called for coordinated efforts by the government, administration, schools, families and society to ensure the rights of kids.
