The South Eastern Railway (SER) has launched an intensive ‘Tank to Tap’ campaign to improve the availability, quality, cleanliness and reliability of drinking water and other water-supply facilities at railway stations.
As part of the 15-day-old drive, the zone has cleaned 17,800 of its 24,033 water storage tanks, with work on the remaining tanks under way. Maintenance, cleaning, inspection, testing and corrective measures are being carried out as part of the campaign.
The railway has also inspected 63 chlorination plants and all 23 Iron Removal Plants located in areas where raw water has high iron content. Their functioning was checked and corrective measures taken wherever required.
Special attention has been given to filtration systems. All 52 pressure/gravity filters in the SER zone have been thoroughly cleaned to remove accumulated dirt and impurities. Defective components and equipment have also been repaired or replaced, and the functioning of the filtration systems checked.
Water quality monitoring is being carried out in coordination with the Health/Medical Department. So far, 3,413 samples have been collected for testing residual chlorine levels, while 334 samples have been taken for bacteriological testing and 21 for chemical analysis. The results are awaited.
The SER has also decided to make cleaning and maintenance of storage water tanks a monthly exercise under a comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC).
