The Ranchi police on Monday launched a seven-day traffic awareness campaign to encourage compliance with road safety norms and help reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused by road accidents.
The first day of the campaign focused on the importance of wearing helmets to protect lives. The awareness drive was conducted at 15 locations across the city, including Hinoo Chowk, Chandini Chowk, Kishore Yadav Chowk, Mission Chowk, Satellite Chowk, Sector-2, ITI Bus Stand, Tilta Chowk, High School Bajra, Jumar Bridge, Booty More and Kantatoli Chowk.
Police said around 1,500 school students, besides a large number of other commuters and residents, were sensitised about traffic rules and road safety.
At Tilta Chowk, SP (City) Paras Rana, SP (Rural) Gaurav Goswami and SP (Traffic) Rakesh Singh led a checking drive at the busy intersection.
Police stopped motorists riding without helmets and those found overspeeding, and explained the traffic rules, penalties for violations and the risks involved in unsafe driving. They also urged parents and guardians not to allow minors to drive vehicles.
SP (Traffic) Rakesh Singh appealed to citizens to follow traffic rules and encourage their family members, children and acquaintances to do the same. “Police appeal to all citizens of the city to follow traffic rules while driving,” he said.
