Jamshedpur: A 62-year-old retired Tata Steel officer died after allegedly jumping from the terrace of a 10-storey apartment building at Vijaya Garden in Baridih early Monday morning.

The incident took place at Phase VII of the residential complex under the Birsanagar police station limits. The deceased, identified as Sandip Pal, reportedly lived on the second floor of the same building.

According to police, Pal went to the terrace in the early hours and allegedly jumped from the building. The impact left him critically injured. Residents, alerted by the sound of the fall, rushed to the spot and took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police said a preliminary inquiry suggested that Pal had been under considerable emotional distress in recent weeks. A resident of the apartment complex said Pal had returned to Jamshedpur around two weeks ago after accompanying his daughter to Mumbai for her admission to a B Com course.

“Since returning, he appeared worried about his daughter’s future and safety,” the resident said. Birsanagar police station in-charge Santosh Kumar said the exact circumstances leading to the incident were being investigated.

Pal was reportedly a former chief of the Merchant Mill division of Tata Steel.
