Ranchi municipality to establish scientific waste processing: Sushant Gaurav

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is focussing on developing scientific waste management and modern processing facilities. Talking to TGC, Municipal Commissioner Sushant Gaurav highlighted that future waste management plans include three new scientific waste management and recycling processing facilities for plastic, C&D, and RDF.

Q. Is the city moving towards scientific waste segregation and processing?

Waste management has improved considerably over the past several years. Instead of directly dumping mixed waste, segregation is now carried out at transfer stations. We are establishing facilities for processing plastic waste, construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) at the site in Jiri.

It involves sorting, shredding, and converting solid materials into reusable products or alternative energy sources. The C&D waste yields recycled aggregates, metals, and engineered wood products, while the RDF yields fuel products along with recovered recyclable material. These projects will strengthen scientific waste management.

Q. Which major urban development projects are expected to be completed this year?

At present, the RMC is focusing on practical civic infrastructure rather than large mega projects. We are developing vendor markets and small commercial facilities at selected locations.

At the initial phase, construction is going on at three locations, including two markets at Morabadi, which comprise one near the Registry Office and the second near the Electricity Department, and a third at Booty More. Moreover, the RMC is also identifying three more sites for the construction work.

Q. Many roads in Ranchi develop potholes soon after the monsoon. What is the civic body’s long-term plan to improve road infrastructure?

Financial constraints are one of the major reasons. The civic body has to prioritise projects within the available budget. Different agencies are involved in executing various civic works, and coordination among them also influences the pace of implementation.

With the limited funds available, we undertake repair and maintenance work wherever required. We are also strengthening drainage systems alongside.

Q. How does the RMC monitor the quality of work executed by contractors?

Every civic service is handled through designated agencies, and each has officers and supervisors responsible for monitoring their work. Regular inspections are conducted, complaints are verified, and reports are reviewed.

Contractors are evaluated based on their performance, and fresh tenders are issued periodically for accountability.

Q. What are the challenges in conducting anti-encroachment drives?

Encroachment removal is a continuous process. The challenge is ensuring that public spaces are not reoccupied after action is taken. We regularly identify encroachments, issue notices, and carry out removal drives wherever necessary.

Public cooperation is essential. Legal action, notices, inspections, and periodic monitoring continue, but lasting results depend on citizens respecting public property and avoiding illegal occupation.

Q. Is the corporation preparing a parking policy as illegal roadside parking continues to create congestion?

One of the biggest issues is that several commercial establishments use designated parking spaces for other purposes, such as shops, storage, or commercial activities. We issue notices, impose penalties and, where required, seal premises.

However, improving compliance also requires greater civic responsibility from property owners. Parking facilities will also be considered as part of future urban planning based on available land and resources.
