Ranchi: Desperate to get back her infant son, a Ranchi woman staged a protest outside the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office on Sunday and threatened to set herself on fire, alleging that she had not received a satisfactory resolution to her complaint.
The woman, identified as Sukhmani, a resident of Daladali on the outskirts of Ranchi, arrived at the SSP’s office with her four children. Police personnel intervened after she threatened to self-immolate and took her under control. Officers subsequently explained the status of the investigation, following which she returned home.
According to police, Sukhmani gave birth to a boy at a private hospital in November 2025. Her husband allegedly handed over the newborn to another person. Police said it was not yet clear whether Sukhmani had consented to the arrangement.
In June, she lodged a complaint at the Hindpiri police station, seeking the return of her son and naming her husband and the person who received the child as accused.
Hindpiri police station in-charge Sunil Kumar Kushwaha said the person who received the infant had subsequently handed him over to his daughter, who does not have a child. The family has refused to return the boy, he said.
To establish the child’s biological parentage, police have sent DNA samples of the boy, Sukhmani and the woman currently raising him to a forensic science laboratory for examination.
Kushwaha said the DNA report was still awaited despite repeated reminders to the laboratory. Police would take further action after receiving the report, he added.
The delay has prolonged Sukhmani’s wait for her son, prompting her to approach the SSP’s office in desperation. Police said the investigation was underway and that the next course of action would depend, in part, on the forensic findings.
