Ranchi: Outside the JSCA stadium during a Jharkhand T20 Cricket League match on Tuesday after an overwhelming number of spectators gathered to witness the tournament’s much-anticipated encounter.
West Gate Breached as 30,000 Cricket Fans Throng Venue
According to reports, nearly 30,000 cricket enthusiasts thronged the venue, creating heavy congestion around the entry gates. The situation deteriorated when a section of the crowd, reportedly upset over difficulties in gaining entry, breached the West Gate, triggering panic and chaos among spectators waiting outside.
At least 30 people reportedly sustained injuries in the ensuing rush. While many received first aid at the venue, three injured spectators were admitted to Raj Hospital for further treatment. Security personnel and local authorities rushed to the spot and eventually brought the situation under control.
Chotanagpur Royals Cruise to Victory Amid Security Concerns
Significantly, the disturbance occurred outside the stadium even as play continued uninterrupted inside. At the time of the incident, Jamshedpur Steelers had scored 180 runs for eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs, with the match progressing amid a charged atmosphere and a packed crowd.
The unprecedented turnout reflected the growing popularity of the Jharkhand T20 Cricket League, which has emerged as one of the state’s premier sporting attractions. However, the incident has also raised serious concerns about crowd management, spectator safety, and the adequacy of security arrangements for high-profile matches.
Officials are expected to review the security protocol and crowd-control measures ahead of the remaining fixtures to ensure the safety of spectators. An assessment of the circumstances leading to the gate breach is also likely to be undertaken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents during the tournament.
Chotanagpur Royals (17.2/20 ov, T:181) 184/3 won the match with 16 balls remaining.
