Jamai Shashti holds a special place among the major festivals of West Bengal. It is considered an important part of Bengali culture and is celebrated every year on the Shashthi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. In 2026, this festival is being celebrated on Saturday, June 20.

The word “Jamai” means son-in-law, while “Shashthi” refers to the sixth day of the lunar month. Therefore, this festival, celebrated on the Shashthi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, is known as Jamai Shashti. It is not only a religious tradition but also a festival that strengthens family relationships.

A Special Festival to Honor the Son-in-Law

Jamai Shashti is primarily celebrated to honor the son-in-law. On this day, the son-in-law visits his in-laws’ home with his wife, where he is given a special welcome. The mother-in-law applies a tilak to her son-in-law’s forehead, ties a yellow thread around his wrist, and prays for his happiness, prosperity, and success.

Bengali families celebrate this day with great enthusiasm and traditional customs. Gifts, clothes, sarees, and sometimes even jewelry are presented to the daughter and son-in-law.

How Are Preparations Made for Jamai Shashti?

Preparations for this special day begin several days in advance. The mother-in-law makes special arrangements to welcome her daughter and son-in-law. New clothes, gifts, and their favorite items are purchased for them.

Along with this, special meals are prepared at home. A menu is created according to the son-in-lawโ€™s preferences so that he is treated with royal honor.

Rituals and Traditions

Jamai Shashti begins with the worship of Goddess Shashthi. The mother-in-law prays to Goddess Shashthi for the happiness, well-being, and prosperity of the entire family. During the worship, five types of fruits, flowers, rice grains, and vermilion are offered to the Goddess.

After this, the son-in-law is welcomed into the home. An aarti is performed, and a tilak is applied to him. A yellow thread is tied around his wrist as a symbol of protection and good fortune. Finally, the son-in-law seeks blessings by touching his mother-in-lawโ€™s feet.

What Is Special About the Jamai Shashti Feast?

A special feast is prepared for the son-in-law on Jamai Shashti. On this day, he is treated like a king, and delicious dishes are prepared especially for him.
