India on Monday raised concerns over the growing menace of cyber scam networks operating in Myanmar’s border regions and stressed the need for enhanced regional cooperation to combat the transnational crime. The issue was discussed during high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi. Both countries also underscored the importance of preventing the misuse of their sovereign territories for activities inimical to each other’s security interests.

The matter figured prominently during bilateral discussions at Hyderabad House, where the two leaders reviewed security cooperation and broader bilateral ties.

During the meeting, President Hlaing reiterated Myanmar’s assurance that its territory would not be allowed to be used against India’s security interests, according to a joint statement issued after the talks. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also expressed support for Myanmar-led efforts aimed at achieving peace, stability, national reconciliation, and socio-economic development. Offering continued assistance and cooperation based on mutual respect and friendly relations, Modi received appreciation from President Hlaing for India’s constructive support. “In his interaction with the President, the Prime Minister stated that Myanmar lies at the confluence of India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East, and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policies,” the joint statement said.

The two leaders emphasised that enhanced connectivity would strengthen economic linkages and promote shared prosperity in the region. They agreed on the importance of expediting the completion of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. Modi also announced that the number of Mekong-Ganga Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships for Myanmar students would increase from 36 to 100 beginning in 2026. This marks President Hlaing’s first visit to India since assuming office. He is also scheduled to visit Mumbai for business interactions and site visits.
