Kolkata: TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s niece Bristi Mukherjee was found hanging at her residence in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday, police said.
Post-Mortem Awaited as Police Investigate Death of Mamata Banerjee’s Niece
The body of Bristi Mukherjee (28), the daughter of Banerjee’s maternal cousin Nihar Mukherjee, was recovered from a room on the second floor of her house at Kusumba village in the Rampurhat area this afternoon, a senior officer said.
Nihar Mukherjee had previously served as the Trinamool Congress president of Rampurhat-I block.
“Bristi Mukherjee’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway. The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries,” he said.
According to family members, Bristi Mukherjee had been suffering from depression for the past few years and was undergoing treatment.
Police Suspect Suicide as Job Loss and Divorce Proceedings Come to Light
She had lost her Group C job following a court order cancelling recruitments in government-aided schools over alleged corruption, they said.
The woman was going through divorce proceedings, which had added to her distress in recent months, the deceased’s family members said.
“It could be a case of suicide. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of death,” another officer said.
