Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: Know These Important Things

‘Ganpati Bappa Morya!’ – With this sacred chant, the atmosphere of Ganesh Utsav comes alive across the country every year.

It is believed that the Ganesh festival begins on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. This year, the auspicious festival will be celebrated on Monday, September 14, 2026.

On this auspicious occasion, devotees of Lord Ganesha enthusiastically invite Ganpati Bappa into their homes and remain engaged in his worship, service and special hospitality for ten consecutive days.

Do Not Offer These 5 Things to Bappa

1. Tulsi : Tulsi should never be offered to Lord Ganesha. Tulsi is considered dear to Lord Vishnu, and therefore, its use in the worship of Lord Ganesha is considered prohibited.

2. Ketaki Flowers : Offering Ketaki flowers to Lord Ganesha is also prohibited. These flowers should not be used during the worship.

3. White and Dried Flowers : Never offer dried flowers to Lord Ganesha. According to religious beliefs, offering dried flowers brings inauspicious results. Similarly, white flowers are also not offered to Lord Ganesha.

4. White Janeu and White Clothes : A white Janeu should not be offered to Lord Ganesha. The Janeu should first be coloured yellow with turmeric and only then offered to Bappa.

Similarly, white clothes should not be used to dress Lord Ganesha.

5. White Sandalwood : White sandalwood should not be applied to Lord Ganesha. Instead, offering yellow sandalwood is considered auspicious.

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi

Lord Ganesha is believed to be pleased when the puja is performed according to the proper rituals. Therefore, keep these things in mind:

• First, take a bath and wear clean and fresh clothes.
• Then, sit in front of Lord Ganesha and begin the puja.
• Abhishek Lord Ganesha with Ganga water.
• Offer Akshat, flowers, Durva grass and prasad such as Modak.
• Light incense, a diya and incense sticks in front of Bappa.
• Finally, perform Lord Ganesha’s Aarti and chant the appropriate mantras.
