Jamshedpur: Steel city police have busted a SIM card fraud racket allegedly supplying illegally activated mobile connections to cybercriminals across the country, arresting three persons, including a Jio employee and two Point of Sale (POS) agents.
The racket came to light following inputs from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Police said the accused exploited the KYC documents of unsuspecting and poorly educated customers to activate multiple SIM cards in their names.
While one SIM was handed over to the genuine customer, the additional connections were sold to cybercriminals for money.
SP (City) Lalit Meena said the gang had allegedly sold more than 1,060 SIM cards in the past six months. Around 600 cyber fraud complaints registered on the CHAKSHU and National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) have been linked to SIM cards issued through the racket.
