The recitation of Durga Saptashati holds great significance in Hinduism, particularly during Navratri.

It is one of the most revered religious texts associated with the worship and blessings of Goddess Durga. The scripture contains profound spiritual teachings and insights into devotion, worship, and spiritual practices. According to religious beliefs, devotees who recite it with sincerity and devotion seek the blessings of the Divine Mother. Durga Saptashati describes the different forms, powers, and divine acts of Goddess Durga. It is a sacred text mentioned in the Markandeya Purana and narrates the Goddess’s victories over evil forces. It is also known by names such as Shatachandi, Navachandi, and Chandi Paath.

According to traditional beliefs, the recitation of Durga Saptashati can offer spiritual strength to people facing mental distress, family difficulties, or serious illnesses. Devotees also believe that the Paath helps them face negativity and various challenges in life. The Devi Bhagavata Purana describes how King Suratha, who wished to regain his kingdom and prosperity, attained his desired kingdom through the grace of the Goddess. During Navratri, many devotees perform Durga Saptashati Paath as part of their religious practices. However, certain traditional rules and procedures are followed while reciting this sacred text.

Rules to Follow While Performing Durga Saptashati Paath

1. Maintain Purity and Discipline

A person performing Durga Saptashati Paath should maintain concentration, purity, and discipline throughout the recitation. Traditionally, devotees are advised to consume pure food, wear red clothes, and apply sacred ash or red sandalwood paste to their foreheads. Eating only once a day is also recommended, and devotees may observe a fast or follow a fruit-based diet if possible.

2. Worship Before Starting the Paath

Before beginning the recitation, devotees should worship Lord Ganesha and their family deity. If a Kalash has been established for Navratri worship, it should also be worshipped. After offering bhog to Goddess Durga, the recitation of Durga Saptashati can begin.

3. Worship the Sacred Book Before Recitation

The Durga Saptashati book should be treated with respect and reverence. According to traditional practices, the book is wrapped in a red cloth and placed on a banana leaf. Devotees should worship the sacred text before starting the recitation.

4. Know the Structure of Durga Saptashati

Durga Saptashati consists of 13 chapters containing a total of 700 verses. Along with the complete recitation, the text includes different sections that devotees may recite according to their capacity and religious practice.

5. Choose a Suitable Method of Recitation

Devotees who are unable to complete the entire Durga Saptashati may recite the Charitra Paath. The text is divided into three sections: Pratham Charitra, Madhyam Charitra, and Uttar Charitra. These sections provide an alternative for those who find it difficult to complete the full recitation. If reciting all three sections is not possible, devotees may also recite individual chapters.

6. Ensure Correct Pronunciation

While performing Durga Saptashati Paath, devotees should pay special attention to the pronunciation of the verses. The recitation should be performed carefully, with proper pronunciation, concentration, and devotion.

7. Recite the Prescribed Prayers Before and After the Paath

Before starting Durga Saptashati Paath, devotees traditionally recite the Kavach, Argala, and Keelak. Once the recitation begins, it is advised not to leave it incomplete. After completing the Paath, devotees should recite the Siddha Kunjika Paath, followed by the chanting of the Navarna Mantra. The worship should then conclude with the aarti of Goddess Durga and the blowing of a conch.

8. Seek Forgiveness for Any Mistakes

If any mistake or omission occurs during the recitation, devotees should offer a prayer seeking forgiveness after the aarti. With folded hands, they should sincerely request the Divine Mother to forgive any errors or shortcomings committed during the worship.
