1,710 cough syrup bottles, 7,200 alprazolam tablets seized; two arrested
Police have arrested two men and seized 1,710 bottles of restricted cough syrup and 7,200 alprazolam tablets worth around ₹4 lakh during raids in Dumka and neighbouring Deoghar districts, officials said on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Jarmundi SDPO Nawal Kishore Singh raided a house near the electricity camp at Charkapathar village under Saraiyahat police station on Thursday. Five cartons containing the medicines were recovered from the premises.
The house, owned by Mohammad Irshad Mian, had been rented to Israel Ansari, Yusuf Ansari alias Yunus Ansari and Shamsher Ansari alias Kelu, all residents of Muslim Tola in Hansdiha.
Police subsequently searched the suspected hideouts of the three men in Hansdiha and arrested Yusuf Ansari and Shamsher Ansari.
“Based on information gathered during the investigation, we conducted further searches at the suspected hideouts of the trio in Hansdiha and arrested Yusuf Ansari and Shamsher Ansari,” Singh said.
The investigation then led police to another suspected stock point in Deoghar. A team raided a rented room at Balthar village under Mohanpur police station and recovered five more cartons of cough syrup.
“The stocks suggest that the medicines were being stored for commercial supply. We are investigating their source and distribution network,” the SDPO said.
Police said the arrested accused have criminal antecedents, including cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act.
Israel Ansari, whom police described as the main accused, remains absconding. Police are investigating the source of the medicines and their alleged distribution network.
