Three women died on Thursday morning following a collapse at an old coal stockpile within Stockyard Number 5 of Kathara Colliery, under the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) in the Bermo subdivision of Bokaro district.
According to reports, the women had arrived at the site to collect coal when the pile collapsed, burying them underneath. Five other individuals were also injured in the incident; some are reported to be in critical condition.
The deceased have been identified as Pushpa Devi (wife of Gallu Rajwar) from Mandai Tola, Kaushalya Devi (wife of Vishwanath Yadav) from Partand, and Sahodari Devi (wife of Hiralal Yadav) from Baburam Tola.
The women’s bodies were sent to Kathara Regional Hospital, where doctors declared all three women dead. Another woman, Malwa Devi, wife of Chhotan Gope from Bandh Basti, sustained minor injuries. She was discharged from Kathara Regional Hospital after receiving primary treatment.
Meanwhile, Subash Yadav, a resident of Kaltola Pardih, is reportedly undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bokaro. Additionally, three others—two women and one man—have sustained serious injuries. Following initial treatment, they were reportedly referred to Bokaro General Hospital (BGH).
However, the names and current medical status of these three individuals have not yet been officially confirmed. Upon receiving information about the incident, officials from the CCL management arrived at the site. Several officials from the area, including Project Officer Ranjeet Kumar and Safety Officer R K Barnwal, were present.
The management dispatched a payloader machine to the site. The machine was used to clear the collapsed coal for inspection, but no signs of any individuals trapped underneath were found.
