An unidentified youth was suspected to have been murdered elsewhere before his body was dumped in an abandoned stone quarry at Malipara village under Pakur Town police station limits, where it was retrieved on Tuesday after bloodstains were spotted scattered on the ground above the quarry by villagers. Police have launched an investigation, though the cause and circumstances of death are yet to be established.
According to villagers, the bloodstains raised suspicions of a crime. When they looked into the quarry, they spotted the body floating in the water and informed the police.
A police team led by SDPO Kumar Gaurav and Town police station officer-in-charge (OC) John Murmu reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The body was retrieved by engaging local divers and sent to Pakur Sadar Hospital for postmortem.
A forensic team also collected blood samples from the ground above the quarry to determine their origin and ascertain whether they were linked to the death.
Town police station OC John Murmu said the body of an unidentified youth had been recovered from the quarry and that the exact cause of death would be established after the postmortem examination. “Efforts are being made to identify the deceased, and local residents are being questioned,” Murmu said.
