Jamshedpur: Two sisters were allegedly hacked to death with an axe by their younger brother at Bawaida village under Dhalbhumgarh police station in East Singhbhum district in the early hours of Monday. The accused, Swarup Tudu, in his late forties, surrendered before the police later in the morning.

According to police, Tudu had been unwell for several days and, when his condition failed to improve, called an ojha (traditional faith healer) to his house on Sunday night. His elder sisters, Dulari Soren (55) and Lakshmi Mandi (50), who lived at different places in Ghatsila subdivision, had arrived to clean the house and look after him.

A puja was reportedly performed at the house that night. After the rituals, the sisters went to sleep. Tudu allegedly attacked them with an axe while they were asleep and killed them.

Dhalbhumgarh police station officer-in-charge Dhiraj Mishra visited the spot and initiated an investigation. He said preliminary findings indicated a possible link to superstition and occult practices, though the exact motive was yet to be established.

The police recovered the bodies and sent them to MGM Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination. The accused was subsequently sent to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
