Three friends, who went missing while returning from Bahraich, were found dead inside their car that had fallen into a pond in Sitapur district, police said on Tuesday.
Police suspect the driver may have dozed off, causing the car to veer off the road and fall into the pond. However, the exact circumstances of the incident are being investigated, Inspector-in-Charge Atul Chaudhary said.
The car was retrieved with the help of a crane around 1.30 am on Tuesday from the pond near Panchpir village.
The deceased were identified as Rakesh Chaurasia (50) and Satish (40), both residents of Sidhauli, and Ramendra (62), a resident of Ataria.
Rakesh, accompanied by his two friends, had gone to Bahraich to visit his son, who had met with an accident. The trio went missing while returning home, following which their families alerted the police and a search was launched.
The bodies were sent for postmortem examination after completion of the inquest proceedings, police said.
