According to the Matsya Purana, the story of the demon Andhaka is famous in relation to the origin of Vastu Purusha. According to it, during the fierce battle between Lord Shiva and the demon Andhaka, a drop of sweat from Lord Shiva fell to the ground, resulting in the birth of a marvellous gigantic being who covered the entire universe with his body.

Seeing this, all the gods became frightened. They took him before Lord Brahma. On the command of Lord Brahma, all the gods threw this extraordinary being from the sky to the earth with his feet upward and head downward. This extraordinary being came to be known as Vastu Purusha.

When Vastu Purusha fell upon the earth, his head was in the north-east direction, i.e., the Ishaan corner, and his feet were in the south-west direction, i.e., the Nairitya corner. He was born in the month of Bhadrapada, Krishna Paksha, Tritiya Tithi, on a Saturday, under Krittika Nakshatra, Vyatipata Yoga, Vrishti Karana, during Bhadra, in the Kulika Muhurta.

At one time, roaring loudly, he reached Lord Brahma and said to him, “O Lord, You have created this entire animate and inanimate universe, yet without any fault of mine, these gods inflict great suffering upon me.”

Then Lord Brahma said, “I grant you a boon that at the beginning of the construction of villages, towns, forts, cities, houses, reservoirs, gardens, etc., people shall respectfully worship you. Those who do not do so shall constantly face obstacles and shall become your food.”

This Vastu Purusha is the foundation of Vastu Shastra. The word Vastu is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Vas’. The meaning of ‘Vas’ in Vastu is residence, and ‘Tu’ means the Supreme Lord. Thus, the meaning of Vastu is the abode of the Supreme Lord.

After food and clothing, the most important need of human beings is shelter. Every person wishes to have a house of their own according to their means. It is the house (Griha) that provides the happiness of wife and children, supports Dharma, Artha, and Kama, serves as the place of comfort for living beings, and protects them from cold, wind, heat, and other hardships.

Just as the human body is composed of the five elements (Space, Fire, Air, Water, and Earth), similarly, the origin and structure of Vastu Shastra are based on the Panchabhuta (Five Elements) principle of creation. It is through the balance and imbalance of these elements that a person experiences health or illness, happiness or sorrow, progress or decline.

Therefore, there exists a similarity and an interdependent relationship between building construction and the human body. In the word “Vastu,” “Va” stands for Air, “A” for Fire, “Sa” for Nature and Earth, “Ta” for Space, and “U” for the life-giving vital force.

Thus, the balance of the five elements is essential in both buildings and the human body, and the knowledge of maintaining this balance is possible only through Vastu Shastra.

Through this knowledge, one understands what kind of building should be constructed so that a harmonious proportion of the elements of the atmosphere may be obtained, enabling people to live happily.
