Sawan 2026: Why is the Month of Shravan Considered Dedicated to Lord Shiva? Know the Religious Significance of Shravan Month

In the Hindu calendar, Shravan Month is considered one of the holiest and most spiritual months. It is not only a time for the worship of Lord Shiva but is also regarded as a symbol of self-purification, discipline, and a positive beginning. Throughout the month, Shiva temples witness large gatherings of devotees, the Kanwar Yatra is carried out, and special prayers are offered every Monday.

How Did Shravan Month Get Its Name? Know Its Religious Basis

Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar. It is named after the Shravan Nakshatra. It is believed that around the full moon of this month, or throughout the month, the Shravan Nakshatra has a special influence. For this reason, the month is called Shravan or Sawan.

In Indian tradition, there has been an ancient custom of naming months based on the constellations (Nakshatras).

Why Is Shravan Month Associated with Lord Shiva?

Shravan Month has a deep connection with Lord Shiva through the sacred traditional story of Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean). According to the story, the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality. During this process, along with many divine treasures, a deadly poison called Halahal emerged first.

This poison was destructive to the entire universe. To protect all living beings, Lord Shiva consumed the poison and held it in His throat. Due to the effect of the poison, His throat turned blue, because of which He came to be known as Neelkanth.

It is believed that to reduce the intensity of the poison, the gods performed Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. This is why offering Ganga water and performing Jalabhishek on the Shivling during Shravan Maas is considered especially important.

Why Is Shravan Monday So Important?

Every Monday of the month of Shravan is called Shravan Somvar and is considered a special day for the worship of Lord Shiva. On this day, devotees observe a fast and perform the Abhishek of the Shivling with water, milk, and Panchamrit.

Bel leaves, flowers, and Datura are offered, and Shiva mantras are chanted. In many temples, a continuous stream of water is offered over the Shivling throughout the day, and an eternal lamp is also kept lit.

According to religious belief, observing the Shravan Monday fast with devotion and discipline brings blessings of mental peace, family happiness, and spiritual progress. Unmarried women also observe this fast to pray for a suitable life partner.

Which Religious Practices Are Considered Auspicious During Shravan Month?

Shravan Month is also considered a month of auspicious beginnings. During this period, along with worshipping Lord Shiva, wearing Rudraksha, chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, and regularly reciting the Shiva Chalisa are considered auspicious.

Offering Panchamrit, Bel leaves, and Ganga water on the Shivling also holds special religious significance. Apart from this, applying Bhasma (sacred ash), or Vibhuti, on the forehead is also considered an important part of Shiva worship.

The Message of Shiva Devotion During Shravan

Shravan Month is not limited only to religious practices, but it also conveys the message of discipline, service, devotion, and respect for nature. The true essence of Shiva devotion is connected not with showmanship, but with sincere faith and a simple heart.

This is why every year, as soon as the month of Sawan begins, a unique gathering of devotees can be seen in Shiva temples across the country, and the entire atmosphere echoes with the chants of “Har Har Mahadev.”
