Rare gesture: RIMS doctors do open-heart surgery on 5-yr-old girl, celebrate her birthday

Ranchi: A birthday celebration of a patient by family members in a hospital is a routine and joyful occasion. But when a government hospital takes the initiative to celebrate a patient’s birthday, it carries a deeper significance and has some larger significance. A resident of Birsa Chawk Ranchi, five-year-old girlโ€™s fifth birthday was celebrated on May 28. For the baby it might be a birthday celebration but for the cardiology department of RIMS, the ocassion was more than special. In our day-to-day lives, government hospitals are often criticised for delays in treatment, prompting many patients from Jharkhand to seek medical care outside the state. However, there are occasions when institutions rise above expectations and set an higher becnhmark of ethics and healing. In a case, which portrays doctors of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences as angels as they successfully performed open-heart surgery on a fiveyear-old girl, suffering from a congenital heart defect. The icing on the cake was total treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The child had been diagnosed with a septal defectโ€”a hole in the heart, present since birth which leads to severe breathing difficulties, recurrent pneumonia, rapid heartbeat and poor weight gain. Following detailed investigations, including echocardiography and cardiac CT scans, doctors confirmed the diagnosis and successfully closed the defect through surgery. The operation was led by Dr Rakesh Chaudhary, while the cardiac anesthesia team was headed by Dr Shiv Priye and Dr Mukesh Kumar. The procedure was supported by resident doctors, perfusionists, operation theatre assistants, ICU nurses and other hospital staff. According to doctors, timely intervention was crucial because untreated congenital heart defects can result in increased pulmonary pressure and other life-threaten ing complications. Following the surgery, the girl’s condition has stabilized, and doctors have observed significant improvement in her symptoms. Adding a human touch to medical success, the department celebrated the child’s fifth birthday at the hospital on May 28. The girl’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and hospital staff for not only the successful treatment but also the compassionate care they received throughout the process. The feat highlighted growing capabilities of RIMS Ranchi in providing advanced cardiac care and reinforces confidence in the state’s public healthcare system. Speaking to TGC, RIMS PRO Dr Shishir Kumar said that the surgery is significant in many ways. He noted that if the operation had not been performed at RIMS, the family would most likely Wwould have travelled outside the state for costly treatment. Dr Kumar added that the availability of free treatment at RIMS under the Ayushman Bharat scheme provided immense relief to the patient’s family.
