Jivitputrika Vrat, also known as Jitiya, is an important Hindu fasting festival observed for the long life, happiness, prosperity, and well-being of children. This year 2026, Jitiya Vrat will be observed on Saturday, October 3. According to the Panchang, Krishna Paksha Ashtami Tithi will prevail on this day.
Do Not Leave the Puja Incomplete Without Listening to the Vrat Katha
During Jitiya Vrat, there is a tradition of listening to the story associated with King Jimutavahana, Garuda, the king of birds, and the serpent Shankhachuda. Therefore, devotees should listen to the Vrat Katha with devotion during the puja.
Do Not Observe the Fast Without Knowing the Rules
Jitiya Vrat is considered one of the more difficult fasts. In many traditions, women observe the fast without food or water throughout the day and night. Therefore, one should understand the fasting procedure according to their family tradition before taking the vow. In case of any illness, weakness, or medical condition, it is not advisable to ignore one’s health.
Do Not Be Careless During Puja
On the day of the fast, there is a tradition of taking a bath and worshipping Lord Vasudeva according to prescribed rituals. A fasting procedure quoted from Hemadri mentions the worship of Lord Vasudeva and offerings of ghee and kheer into the sacred fire. During the puja, one should avoid rushing through the rituals or showing disrespect toward the puja materials.
Do Not Rush the Paran
According to religious beliefs, the fast should be broken at the prescribed time based on the calculation given in the local Panchang. The Tithi and Paran timings may vary from one location to another. Therefore, the fast should be broken according to the Panchang applicable to your region.
