The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has initiated the process of providing legal assistance and financial compensation to the family of a 14-year-old girl allegedly murdered in Jitpur village under Kathikund police station in Dumka district.
Principal District and Sessions Judge-cum-DLSA Chairman Sudhanshu Kumar Shashi took cognisance of the incident through newspaper reports and directed DLSA Secretary Vivek Kumar to ensure immediate legal assistance to the bereaved family.
Acting on the direction, the DLSA secretary constituted a team of paralegal volunteers and deputed it to meet the family. The team apprised the family of their legal rights and the assistance available through the authority. It also received applications seeking financial compensation and legal aid, according to a DLSA press release issued on Sunday.
The intervention comes amid public outrage over the girl’s killing. Her body was found in a bush about 500 metres from her house on Friday evening. Suspicions of sexual assault have also emerged, though police have not made any official statement confirming such allegations.
The girl, a Class IX student of PM Shri Madhuban High School, returned home from school on Friday and had her meal before going to a nearby field to untie cattle. When she failed to return, her family grew concerned, particularly after the cattle came home on their own.
Family members and villagers subsequently launched a search and found her body in a bush. The police were informed following the discovery.
