A horrific multivehicle collision caused by a speeding car on the Subarnarekha river overbridge in Amainagar late Wednesday night left a five-year old girl dead and six others injured. The incident, which occurred under the jurisdiction of Ghatsila Police Station in East Singhbhum district, triggered massive public outrage, resulting in a violent mob thrashing of the driver and a passenger. According to the police, the speeding vehicle first rammed into two moving scooters and a motorcycle on the overbridge, injuring three commuters. In a desperate bid to escape the scene, the driver accelerated sharply, losing control of the vehicle further down the bridge. The car then veered into the opposite lane, crashing head-on into another motorcycle. The force of the second impact threw 48-year-old Sushmita Sinha off the motorcycle and over the bridge railing into the swollen Subarnarekha river. Her husband, Subrato Sinha (56), was driving the motorcycle. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) immediately launched an extensive two-hour search and rescue operation. Personnel successfully rescued Sushmita alive in the wee hours of Thursday, approximately 2 km downstream from the crash site.

The Sinha family was rushed to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) with severe injuries. The couple’s five-year-old daughter, Shreya, succumbed to her injuries during treatment on Thursday morning. Subrato Sinha remains in critical condition, while Sushmita and their two-year-old son, Shubradeep, are currently recuperating. The three victims from the initial collision were identified as Suresh Bhagat (60), Neha Verma (28) and Rinki Verma (26). An angry mob of local bystanders chased down and apprehended the fleeing vehicle. The crowd dragged the driver, identified as Govardhan Patra (45) of Musaboni, out of the car and beat him severely. A passenger inside the vehicle
was also assaulted by the crowd.
